January 2018 has been a positive one for Ghana sports with some of our national teams and sporting personalities achieving glory in their various fields.
We bring you the top 5 sporting stories of the month of January.
1. 2017 CAF Awards
The 2017 edition of the CAF Awards happened with no Ghanaian team or footballer picking up an Award. The award ceremony was also soiled by the lack of local content when it came to the entertainment end of things, with 6 Nigerian artiste performing on the night compared to just one by Ghana (Efya, who sang the Ghana national anthem)
Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohammed Salah was deservedly crowned the best player of the year 2017.
2. Akwasi Frimpong makes history
Akwasi Frimpong secured qualification to become first skeleton athlete from West Africa to participate in an Olympic Game. He will participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea as a Ghanaian. He represented the Dutch in previous competitions.
3. Akufo-Addo has forgotten Dzamefe Commission White Paper
President Akufo-Addo killed the hopes of Ghanaians who had expectations that his government will implement recommendations of the Dzamefe Commission, set up by former President Mahama to investigate Ghana’s shambolic 2014 World Cup participation, by stating categorically that “I’ve forgotten about the 2014 White Paper”.
The president in response to a question by Country Man Songo during a meet-the-press session disclosed that implementing the works of the commission is not a priority of his government.
4. Dogboe inches closer to World Title fight
Isaac Dogboe took a giant step towards a World title bout after giving Cesar Juarez a fourth round knockout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
The victory was Dogboe’s 18th victory of his professional career. 12 of those 18 wins have come by knockout. The victory sets up a mandatory clash with the title holder Jesse Magdaleno later this year.
5. Black Princess qualify for 2018 Women’s World Cup
The Black Princesses booked a places in this year’s FIFA under-20 Women’s World Cup by thumping Cameroon 4-1 aggregate on aggregate. Coach Basigi’s girls defeated their Cameroonian counterparts 3-0 at the Cape Coast Stadium to secure a ticket.
