Interim Black Queens head coach, Mercy Tagoe Quarcoo, says she is very delighted at the team’s capture of the WAFU Women’s Zone B Tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Black Queens beat Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 in the final on Saturday to win the title and get revenge over the come country for the 1-0 group stage loss.

Jante Egyir got the winning goal in the final and the team’s successful in tournament was a source of great joy for Tagoe, who was once a Black Queens player and featured in the Women’s World Cup in 1999.

“I feel extremely because I knew I would win the final. I was not going to allow myself to be beaten by the same team twice in the same tournament.

Our early goal in the final was part of our strategy. I told them that if we could get an early goal and stay compact, we would be able to protect the lead.

Of course, we has to deal with the physical strength of the Ivorians and that was a challenge. At a point, I became unhappy with the ladies but I realised that they had to deal with the Ivorians and so, I urged them to stay calm and pass the ball around.”

The Queens have followed the lead of the Black Stars B team to win the WAFU Zone B Tournament and for Tagoe, success in her very first stint as a coach, was a very humbling experience since she and her team mates, such as Alberta Sackey and Sheila Okine, failed to win any major honours during the time as Black Queens players.

“To be honest, I really wept after the final whistle because I could not believe that I had won the match. As a player, I could not win anything with the national team but I got it right as coach of the team.”

The Black Queens will now switch their attention to the 2018 Women’s African Cup of Nations slated for Ghana later this year.
