Former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, has suggested to members of the football fraternity to return to basics in the wake of the formation of a Normalization Committee.

To the former football commenter and Press Secretary to Prez Kufuor, reviving community-based clubs is one of the surest ways to return the country’s football to its former state.

He attributed the downward trend in football in the country to the formation of clubs by too many individuals; contrary to the previous when they were community-based and fans felt part of the clubs.

The smooth-talking politician urged all to get involved in the reformation processes rather than leaving it in the hands of some fraction of individuals who refer to themselves as football people.

He said during the John Agyekum Kufuor (JAK) launch on Monday that “Let’s go back to the basics; collaborating with government to restructure our football should be the way forward; we should all get involved and not leave it in the hands of some few individuals who call themselves football people.

“We are all football people; when football thrives, all of us become happy. Football was doing well in the past because it was community-based; we had clubs like Swedru Fankobaa, Swedru All Blacks, Susubribi, Voradep, Cape Coast Vipers, Okwawu United etc who were doing so well because the various communities felt part of the clubs.

“Now so many individuals are running clubs, and so the fans are detached from the clubs; l think the reforms start with going back to the basics.” World’s football governing body; FIFA has instructed Ghana to form a Normalization Committee following a documentary that revealed alleged corrupt practices by certain football officials.
