The Ministry of Youth and Sports on Thursday, presented cheques totalling 20 million cedis to the families, wife and children of the late international soccer star, Shamo Quaye.
Out of the sum, which was accrued from a charity football match in honour of the late footballer, the wife and children received 15 million cedis, while the paternal and maternal families had 2.5 million cedis each.
Mr E. T. Mensah, the sector Minister, who presented the cheques said the Ministry in conjunction with the National Sports Council, Ghana Football Association and M-NET Services (organisers of the match) had planned to set up a trust fund, to use the money for the children's education.
"However, we have decided to discontinue with the administration of the Trust Fund, which was to be headed by Colonel George Brock due to false reports in a section of the media about how the money is being disbursed".
Mr Mensah said the Ministry in consultations with M-NET Services decided to share the money among the family in order to halt the complaints and false accusations from the families and friends.
Mr E. A. Abbey and Mrs Jacqueline Adjei received the cheques on behalf of Shamo's families while Mrs Tina Quaye and children received their share.
Mr Abbey and Mr George Kormietei, representative of Mrs Quaye's family thanked the Ministry for the gesture.
The late Shamo was a former footballer of Accra Hearts of Oak and the Black Stars.
He was plying his trade with a Swedish first division side, UNEA but died while on holidays in the country in November 1997.
