Chief Operating Officer of StarTimes Ghana, Felix Ahonzo has disclosed that the company is not engaged in any fight with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, GBC, after beating them to win Television broadcast rights for the coverage of the Ghana Premier League.
The GFA has awarded the TV broadcast rights of the GPL to Chinese pay-tv company, StarTimes snubbing the state broadcaster who were part of the bidders.
The decision to award the contract to StarTimes did not go down well with GBC and according to them their bid was financially superior to that of StarTimes, and have questioned why the GFA still went ahead to announce the Chinese company as winners.
In 2016 when StarTimes bounced on the Ghanaian scene as media right holders for the Ghana Premier League, it partnered with GBC to bring live coverage to viewers.
Although the new uproar seems to have ignited a bad relationship between the two television broadcasters, the COO of StarTimes has debunked rumors that a bad blood exists. He added that, StarTimes will continue to partner with GBC when necessary.
“As far as Startimes is concerned we are in very good terms with GBC, we’ve been in good terms with GBC since 2016 and we have not been attacked directly and we are keeping the relationship as it is,” Felix Ahonzo said.
He added, “We have a business relationship, we have partnership relationship with GBC and that is not destroyed. Relationship can go frosty but it is life and there is no problem, if we have to corporate with GBC why not it’s for the good of the game therefore there is no fight..”
