Return of Ghana League will be determined by government – GFA Exco member

An executive council member of the Ghana Football Association has said that a decision on the resumption of the Ghana Premier League will be made after consultations with the government.

The GPL and all sporting activities in the country have been suspended indefinitely following a ban on all forms of social gathering by the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Uncertainty about the return of the league remains as the government has so far not been able to announce a date for the lifting of the ban.

Most GPL club are bearing the brunt of the absence of football as they continue to pay players’ salaries for literally no work done.

But Frederick Acheampong who is also the CEO of Ashgold says the FA are not in a haste to announce a return of the GPL.

He told Asempa FM that the association won’t prioritize the game over human lives.

He added that the FA is in constant engagement with the country’s health officials and as and when they are given the clearance to resume the league, the clubs will be duly informed.

“The directive by the FA is on reliant with the position of government. If government recalls those decision and allows for social gathering, football will obviously return. It was a good call because the case in Italy as you know was triggered by that Valencia-Atalanta match”.

“The resumption of the dependent is on the position of government. They are monitoring the situation and have access to everything so once the virus has not gone down a bit it will be difficult for football to return. This is different from the situation where the league was suspended due to Number12. The bottom line is that human life is more important than anything”.

Medeama were leading the league table before the suspension.

They were, however, deducted points after they were found to have fielded an unqualified player in a league game against Accra Great Olympics.

The club has indicated that it will contest the FA’s ‘bogus ruling’ when the dust settles.
