A player in the Ghana Premier League opened up on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on footballers.

Kofi Owusu, a striker with Berekum Chelsea has revealed the battle of footballers to stay fit in the absence of football and training.

It has been almost a month since a ban was imposed on all forms of social gatherings including football.

Added to that is a lockdown of some parts of the country which has restricted the movement of almost everyone in the affected areas.

Kofi Owusu says the absence of football and usual club training session has taken a toll on him.

He revealed that despite some physical exercises at home, he is still gaining some flesh.

"Some of us cannot go out to train due to the partial lockdown directives by the President. I can see am growing fat after the league break, though, I trained at home but it's not like training with my club (Berekum Chelsea) where you are strictly instructed to do", he said.

Meanwhile, an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association says a decision on the return of the league will be made in consultation with the government and health authorities.

“The directive by the FA is on reliant with the position of government. If government recalls those decision and allows for social gathering, football will obviously return. It was a good call because the case in Italy as you know was triggered by that Valencia-Atalanta match”.

“The resumption of the dependent is on the position of government. They are monitoring the situation and have access to everything so once the virus has not gone down a bit it will be difficult for football to return. This is different from the situation where the league was suspended due to Number12. The bottom line is that human life is more important than anything.”
