President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Kwabena Yeboah has signalled his fear for local clubs should the 2019-20 football season be cancelled.
According to him, some football clubs go extinct if such a development should occur.
The Ghana FA suspended the current football season in March amid the CoronaVirus outbreak. This was in conformity with the government’s ban on all public gatherings which forms part of measures announced by President Akufo-Addo to curb the spread of CoronaVirus.
With no end in sight and a final decision needed, pressure has been mounting on the GFA to take a decision in this regard.
Opinions from football stakeholders have been divided on this with a section badly calling for a scrapping of the season while others have shot against it and in the event outlined the likely implications such a decision will have on Ghana Football.
Adding his voice to the conversation Kwabena Yeboah who is also a seasoned commentator shared his fear that local clubs who are already struggling could suffer collapse should the season be nullified.
‘Even when the league was in full flight, the clubs suffered a great deal. Embarrassingly in Ghana, some of our players take home a poultry 100 dollars at the end of the month and you will just wonder how they will survive on that. If the league is cancelled, I bet you that quite a number of our teams could be extinct,” he told Joy News’ PM Express Show.
Kwabena Yeboah used the opportunity to canvass government support for football clubs in these difficult times.
