Ghanaian football legend Malik Jabir
Retired Ghanaian professional footballer Malik Jabir has stated that naming people after stadiums should not be based on tribal grounds or the ability of an individual to pay but the work done for Ghana.
Declining to comment on whether it was appropriate for the state to charge people before naming them after our stadiums, he said: ‘’this is a political issue and I do not want comment on it. However, we should name our stadiums after people who have sacrificed a lot for the nation’’.
He referenced the late Ohene Djan saying he had a vision for the nation to help transform sports in Ghana.
To him, the late Ohene Djan raised the standard of athletics, football, boxing and other sporting disciplines hence naming him after a stadium was well deserved.
He was of the view that no one should question why the Accra Sports Stadium was named after him.
‘’They named him after the stadium because he was an outstanding sports personality. His contribution to football in Ghana was unmatched.’’
Malik Jabir told host of Total Sports Review Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that, naming people after sports stadiums should not be based on tribal grounds but the contributions the person might have done for the nation.
Meanwhile, another retired footballer, Rev. Kofi Pary shares a different view saying anyone who has be name after a sports stadium of facility should done in the community the person fails from.
He said persons who deserve to be rewarded for their contributions to sports in Ghana be rewarded with facilities in their home region so it will encourage others.
