President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has signed the Ghana Shippers' Authority Act 2024 into law.
This legislation aims to strengthen the Ghana Shippers' Authority (GSA) and enhance the regulation of Ghana's commercial shipping sector.
In a release seen by GhanaWeb Business, the Authority said, "The Ghana Shippers' Authority (GSA) is pleased to announce that on Friday, 18th October 2024, His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo gave his assent to the Ghana Shippers' Authority Act 2024, which was passed by Parliament on July 29, 2024."
This new Act empowers the GSA to regulate all modes of transport — sea, air, and land.
The move also aims to ensure fairness, efficiency, and integrity within the shipping and logistics sector.
Ghana’s shipping industry stands to gain from this strengthened oversight, which promotes transparency in pricing and fairness in service delivery, establishing Ghana as a preferred destination for international trade.
Established in 1974 as the Ghana Shippers' Council, the GSA was rebranded in 1998 to better reflect its enhanced regulatory responsibilities.
Over the years, the GSA has championed policies that promote a balanced trade environment, working to create conditions for a sustainable and competitive commercial shipping landscape in Ghana.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Shippers' Authority has launched a nationwide sensitization campaign to inform stakeholders about their rights and responsibilities under the new regulatory framework.
