Commodity prices soar at Sunyani

Shoppers in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region have expressed worry over the sudden increase in the prices of foodstuffs in the municipality.

A market survey conducted by CITY & BUSINESS GUIDE at the Nana Bosoma Market in Sunyani on Wednesday showed that prices of foodstuffs and goods have been increased due to the fuel price hikes.

The price of a bag of onion, which was selling between GH¢120 and GH¢150, has been increased to between GH¢180 and GH¢200, while a bag of millet, which stood at GH¢150 before the fuel hike, has shot up to GH¢200.

A bag of cement has shot up from GH¢18 to between GH¢19.00 and GH¢20. A bag of local brown rice, which was priced at GH¢200, is selling at GH¢250 while local rice, which was sold for GH¢180 has been increased to GH¢200.

The price of a bag of ‘gari’ has been increased from GH¢120 to GH¢150 while the price of a bag of beans has been increased from GH¢180 to GH¢200. A bag of ‘Agushie’ now goes for GH¢500, with a bag of groundnut moving from GH¢200 to GH¢250.

About 100 average-sized tubers of white yam, which was priced at GH¢200 formerly, now sells at GH¢250 while the price of the same quantity of ‘Pona’ yam has been increased from GH¢300 to GH¢350. Again, a 91-kilogramme bag of cassava is being sold at GH¢70 as against the previous GH¢60.

Afia Amponsah, an onion seller, expressed worry about the astronomical increase in the prices of foodstuffs. “Our profits keep decreasing everyday when they go to the Northern part of Ghana and Techiman to buy their goods.”

The price of a bunch of plantain (apem) weighing between 11 and 13 kilogrammes, however, has decreased from GH¢10 to GH¢6 but the price of a crate of tomato has been increased from GH¢200 to GH¢250 while the price of a mini bag of garden eggs weighing 42 kilogrammes has been increased from GH¢30 to GH¢75.
