Some political leaders are involved in the alleged fertilizer theft and smuggling
Following an exposé of fertilizer theft and smuggling in the Sissala East District of the Upper West Region, mynewsgh.com can report that new locks have been procured and secured the cotton ginnery warehouse in Tumu where thousands of bags of fertilizer for government’s flagship agricultural programme, planting for food and jobs have been stored.
The keys to the warehouse were reportedly been taken away from the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, Karimu Nanyua, after it was alleged that some political leaders are involved in the alleged fertilizer theft and smuggling.
Our investigations revealed that it was the Upper West Regional Minister who ordered that the closure of the warehouse and took the keys to Wa, the Upper West Regional capital pending the outcome of investigations.
The district Agric Director, Daniel Kuurii-Naa confirmed the closure of the warehouse to mynewsgh.com in a telephone interview but failed to advance reasons for it.
According to him, security has also been stepped up at a facility in order to protect the fertilizer that has been stored for use during the next cropping seasons
Checks however reveal that there is no police presence to guide the warehouse and as such there are fears that another theft case can occur anytime.
However, section of the youth in the district believes that there is a calculated cover-up the theft and smuggling.
A lot of them expressed their frustrations in the secrecy and cover-up involved in the investigation of the fertilizer theft issue accusing the police and the DCE of being complicit in the whole deal.
