The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has acquired two cable fault testing vans to identify faults within cables as well as boost electricity supply to customers.

The vans which were inaugurated in Accra on Thursday, would in addition reduce power outages that customers endure in helping to locate faults which could be responded to on time.

They were purchased from BAUR Pruf –Und Mess Technik Austria and Specialised Instruments Company Ltd (SICL) at an estimated cost of about 600,000 dollars.

Mrs Perpetual Phyllis Darfoor, Board Chairperson of ECG, said the vans would help solve pressing issues facing the distribution of electricity to their customers.

She said the need to acquire the test vans became necessary due to time constraints they had to spend on trying to identify faults with cables because they were invisible and customers would be without of electricity.

Mrs Darfoor said it was the first time BAUR was working with the company and expressed the hope that the team that came from Austria to train staff of ECG would respond quickly when the need arose.

Mr. Emmanuel Nicholas Tekyi, SICL Local Representative of BAUR commended ECG for the purchase of the vans, saying the contract between ECG and BAUR was executed within the time frame and all standards set out for the supplier.

He noted that though the cost of replacement of parts to carry out an effective preventive maintenance was not covered, the vans were covered by a year's warranty against manufacturing defects.

Mr. Robert Dwamena, Director of Material and Transport-ECG, noted that ECG was expanding its network to face challenges facing power distribution in the southern sector of the country, hence the need to procure two additional test vans.

He expressed the hope that SICL would offer ECG prompt and reliable after sales services.

Mr. Tetteh Okyne, Director of Operations of ECG, said the vans would enhance operations of the company and commended management on their purchase.

He said 15 staff of ECG were undergoing a two-month training programme in Ghana and Austria on the use of the vans.**
