Accra, July 28 GNA - Dr Anthony Akoto-Osei, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, on Wednesday said the development and continuous healthy state of the economy should interest all Ghanaians irrespective of political affiliation.
He said a healthy economy was a prerequisite for the creation of wealth for the present and future generations. A release issued by the Ghana High Commission in London and made available to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said Dr Akoto-Osei made the observation at the launching of a biography of President John Agyekum Kufuor.
The title of the biography is: "Between Faith and History - A Biography of J.A. Kufuor".
Dr Akoto-Osei urged Ghanaians not to forget the state of the economy when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) assumed office in 2001. He said due to the prudent fiscal and monetary policies put in place by the Government, the country's economic fortunes had improved with her import cover being increased from a few days to almost four months.
On Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative, Dr Akoto-Osei explained that hard work was the underlying philosophy that enabled Ghana to reach the completion point.
He noted that HIPC had been useful, beneficial and resulted in the judicious use of financial resources that accrued to the nation for major infrastructure developments.
Dr Akoto-Osei said the challenge posed by HIPC was how to manage the way forward and build upon the gains so for achieved in various sectors of the economy.
