Accra, Sept 23, GNA- Mr. John Awuni, Director of Corporate Affairs, Finatrade Group of Companies, on Thursday announced that his outfit would next year establish a scholarship scheme for research students in Agriculture. "The scheme which will mostly sponsor post graduate students in Agriculture is aimed at identifying challenges and finding solutions to them to ensure food sufficiency and security in the country." Mr. Awuni announced this when he presented a cheque for GH¢3,000.00 to ten students of the University of Ghana Agricultural College as part payment of their annual sponsorship. Finatrade Foundation, a subsidiary of Finatrade Group of Companies, for the past six years sponsored a total of 126 brilliant, but needy students under their scholarship scheme for Agricultural students in the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University for Development Studies. Under the scheme, each sponsored student is given GH¢ 600.00 annually for payment of fees and other practical expenses. Mr. Awuni said the bane of agriculture in Ghana was not due to lack of inputs, but mainly the lack of professionals and experts to churn out better agricultural practices to farmers hence their sponsorship. "The foundation for agriculture in the country is very weak and we cannot continue to sacrifice our agricultural needs on political platforms as politicians keep changing policies." The Corporate Affairs Director said as part of their partnership with Government to improve on Agriculture, Finatrade would also establish another model farm at the University of Ghana Campus in addition to the one established years ago at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He promised that the GH¢ 600.00 sponsorship package for students would be increased to GH¢ 700.00, next academic year to meet the rising cost of goods and services. Mr. Awuni appealed to government to consider supporting the Meteorological Services Department with modern equipment that would empower them to predict weather patterns well for farmers to study for their activities. Professor Benjamin Ahulu, Provost of the University of Ghana College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences, who received the cheques on behalf of the students, said the Finatrade foundation scholarship scheme had helped the students to achieve higher academic laurels. "Last year, the best student from this college was a Finatrade sponsored student and this time round, the female student who is likely to become the best student is also sponsored by Finatrade." He noted that with the lessening of financial burdens on students, they could perform better in their academia and called on other organizations to sponsor students to achieve the food needs of the country.
