The Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku has expressed dissatisfaction over the surge in illegal lottery operators in the country.

In an interview with peacefmonline.com on August 8, 2024, he stated that the World Lottery Association estimates that Ghana has at least 680 illegal lotto operators.

He added that the Association also approximates the country's annual revenues at not less than 1.8 billion cedis, but the illegal operators consume 1. 2 billion cedis out of this money annually.

He said most of the illegal lottery operators pose a major threat to the industry and appealed to them to regularise their operations.

“So, technically, the markets are for the illegal operators. Ghana will still move on when NPP is not in power and someday when NDC is not in power…But my point is the institution of state must be protected," he noted.
