Ghana Airways was established in 1958
Ghana Airways is expected to return to the skies in 2027, with Canada identified as a priority destination for direct flights under the government’s plan to revive the country’s national airline.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that President John Dramani Mahama had taken steps to restore the airline, which ceased operations more than two decades ago.
According to Ablakwa, a technical committee established by the President has completed its work and submitted a report to guide the revival of the national carrier.

He also disclosed that President Mahama had held discussions with aircraft manufacturer Boeing as part of preparations to bring the airline back into operation.
“President Mahama is passionate that the pride of Ghana, the wings of Ghana, which flew in the skies and made all of us proud until the early 2000s,” Ablakwa said.
“President Mahama has put together a technical committee. They have submitted their report. Last month, he had a good meeting with the management of Boeing, and I can confirm to you that President Mahama’s target is that next year, 2027, we should have Ghana Airways back in the skies,” he added.
The Foreign Affairs Minister said the government had identified priority international routes for the proposed airline, with direct flights between Ghana and Canada receiving particular attention.
He said President Mahama had instructed him to inform Ghanaians that the Ghana-Canada route would be a major priority when the airline resumes operations.
The proposed service would allow passengers to travel between the two countries without connecting through another destination, if successfully introduced.
Established in 1958, Ghana Airways was once the country’s national airline, operating international flights before ceasing operations in 2004 following years of financial and operational difficulties.
The proposed revival forms part of the government’s efforts to restore Ghana’s presence in international aviation and strengthen air connections with major destinations.
