Ghana Telecom is in the process of investigating the use of the Wireless Local Loop system for the provision of telephone services to Dorimon and Wechau in the Upper West Region and if found feasible would provide a long-term solution to the service problems much earlier than anticipated in that area.
So far, 33 telephone lines have been extended from Wa to Dorimon since 1998, however, due to a technical problem in the transmission equipment, the service had been disrupted and every effort was being made to restore services.
The Minister of Communications, Mr Albert Kan-Dapaah said this in Parliament on Friday in an answer to a question as to when his ministry would extend telephone facilities to Dorimon and Wechau in the Wa Central constituency.
Similarly Wechau, which is 80 kilometres from Wa, would be served between 2004 and 2005.
He said the Ministry of Communications was in touch with Ghana Telecom to ensure completion of the project by the end of June 2003 and that since Dorimon was about 19 kilometres from Wa it would be served by radio (wireless) from the Wa exchange in the long-term
The Minister also announced that telephone facilities would be extended to Chereponi between 2004 and 2005.
