Ghana telecom donates to schools

Accra, May 15, GNA - Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited (GT) on Thursday donated education materials worth GH¢2,000 to four basic schools at Senya Beraku.

The donation formed part of the company's appreciation and also to commend the chiefs and people of Senya Beraku for their cooperation, collaboration and support since the company decided to establish a cell site in the area.

The schools are Senya Beraku D/A primary, St. Theresa Girls School, Methodist Primary and Bonsoku DC Primary school. Mr. Johnny Annor Quarshie, Head of Onetouch, a subsidiary of GT, said the company had contributed and supported many social causes and activities adding; "this donation is one of the many that the company had made this year".

He expressed the hope that the education materials would get to the children on time so that they could help them in their learning process. Nenyi Essel, a sub-chief who received the items on behalf of the chief and the four schools thanked Onetouch for their gesture and appealed to other corporate bodies to emulate what the company had done. In an interview with the GNA the headteacher of Senya Breku D/A primary school, Mr Isaac MaCarthy-Mensah said the enrolment figure in the school had increased significantly. He attributed this to the calibre of the teaching staff that had been posted to the area in recent years and the relationship between staff of the school and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). He, however, said there was the need for government to speed up the rehabilitation of the school buildings since some of them were in a deplorable state.

"When it rains, some of the children have to be moved to join others in their classrooms or sometimes the school is even closed for fear of what might happen. I will therefore urge government to speed up the building process since we are in the raining season," he said.
