The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has announced plans to begin a maintenance and enhancement programme across its operational areas to tackle persistent distribution challenges and improve power reliability.

According to a press release issued on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the initiative follows a system-wide review that identified specific infrastructure constraints and service delivery gaps, necessitating immediate and targeted interventions.

As part of the rollout, extensive system upgrades and transformer replacements are already gaining momentum in Tamale and its environs to address low voltage issues and frequent outages.

The government is also making substantial investments in new hardware, including the procurement of 500 distribution transformers by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition for deployment in various affected communities.

High-capacity equipment is also being installed at critical nodes, including a new 20/26 MVA transformer at the Berekum Primary Substation to relieve an old, overloaded 10 MVA unit.

Similar major upgrades are underway at the Wa Primary Substation and the Techiman Bulk Supply Point, where GRIDCo is installing a 66 MVA transformer.

“Transformer replacement programmes and broader system upgrade works are already underway in Tamale and surrounding areas, aimed at improving network stability, addressing low voltage, and reducing outages,” the statement noted.

NEDCo is also prioritising maintenance tasks such as vegetation control on 78 feeders to prevent external interference with power lines.

The company, however, cautioned that temporary power interruptions may occur as part of efforts to protect both personnel and equipment.

It assured the public that advance notice of any planned outages will be shared through its official communication channels to minimise inconvenience to consumers.

“Priority actions include vegetation control on 78 feeders, upgrades to overloaded substations, and the replacement of damaged and overloaded transformers,” the statement added.

The Ministry says it remains committed to ensuring a more stable and reliable power supply through sustained technical interventions and collaboration.
