Ing Emmanuel Ankomah is the General Manager for the ECG in the Tema Region
Correspondence from the Eastern Region
The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), which includes parts of the Eastern Region, has expended a total of GH¢13,079,669 on transformer replacements spanning the last quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.
The General Manager for the region, Ing Emmanuel Ankomah, disclosed this during an engagement with a cross-section of journalists at the ECG Nungua District Office on April 14, 2026.
He provided a breakdown of the expenditure, indicating that GH¢9,379,765 was used to replace 32 transformers in the final quarter of 2025, while GH¢3,699,903 covered the replacement of 22 transformers in the first quarter of 2026.
Explaining the causes behind the replacements, Ing Ankomah cited vandalism as a major factor, noting that damaged installations often require complete replacement.
He also raised concerns about unauthorised interference by some community members, stating that “some community members decide to switch phases on their own. This causes overloads on the other phase which sometimes causes the transformer to burn,” adding that such actions are prosecutable.
He further identified vehicular accidents involving electrical installations as another cause of damage.
Ing Ankomah urged the public and community leaders to support efforts to protect ECG infrastructure, emphasising its importance to stable power supply, while commending residents who promptly report faults and outages.
