ISSER proposes shared growth agenda

The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research is proposing a shared growth agenda in all the 10 regions of the country that will immensely support poverty reduction.

ISSER believes the proposed programme will also reduce rural-urban migration.

The shared growth agenda was common during the era of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah where factories were cited in all regions.

Though poverty went down to about 28.5 percent in 2006, the margin of reduction so far had been small.

Speaking to XYZ NEWS the Director of ISSER, Professor Felix Asante said government must find ways of sharing growth.

“When you take the three northern regions poverty levels are almost the same so what is telling us is that there are some hot spots down south that poverty has fallen drastically so the net effect is a fall. So now the issue is if you start looking at the figures you will think we are doing well but then a lot of people are suffering so we need to find ways of sharing growth so that the poverty levels in the north will come down,” he said.
