President John Mahama has commissioned a new ferry and a Water taxi for residents of Agordeke in the Afram Plains North District of the Eastern region after the old ferry broke down 10 years ago.

The commissioning of the new ferry has re-connected the Afram Plains area to Kpando-Torkor in the Volta region.

Agordeke, a fishing community, was one of the busiest commercial communities in the district but almost became a ghost town when the Pantoon broke down.

The ten years absence of the ferry negatively impacted on both transportation and the local economy since market activities were affected. Agordeke and surrounding communities are the food baskets for the country.

Commissioning the ferry on Thursday, President Mahama said, government noted the negative effect the absence of the ferry brought to the people during the 2012 campaign hence the provision of the ferry and water taxi.

The President also added that, the facilities would help reduce the disturbing news of boat accidents on the lake.

President Mahama also assured that, the Donkorkrom to Agordeke road will be rehabilitated.

Residents in the area, expressed gratitude to the President for the facilities provided. According to them, it is a big sigh of relief as the hours spent travelling from the area to the Volta Region and other areas will be shortened.
