Fri, 13 Jun 1997 Source: --

Tourism awareness Limited, a non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with the Ho District Assembly have embarked on an educational drive on environmental sanitation, the formation of tourist development committees in the communities and guides as part of the measures to promote tourism in the district.

The decision was announced after a meeting between a team of the Tourist Development Sub-Committee of the Ho District Assembly and some executives of Tourism Awareness Limited, after visiting some identified tourist centres including Amedzofe, Kpoeta-Ashanti, and Abutia to interact with the chiefs and elders. Togbe Adja-Tam VI, Chairman of the Tourism Development Sub-Committee indicated that it was necessary to encourage community members to engage in traditional handicrafts and other income-generating ventures to raise their standard of living.

He explained that such measures will inspire tourists and restore dignity and enthusiasm in the community. Mr Jan Visser, a consultant with Tourism Awareness Limited, in an interview said tourists are more interested in natural scenes at the countryside, adding that there is therefore the need to open-up and develop tourist sports in the rural areas.
