No spare parts price hike claim ‘lie’ – GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has described as lies, claims by the Association of Used Auto Parts Dealers at Abossey-Okai in the Greater Accra Region that prices of spare parts have not increased for the past one year.

The Association last week sounded a note of caution to the Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU) to desist from any intended transport fare increments based on spare parts prices.

Spokesperson of the Association, Eric Crentsil, in a statement on Tuesday, January 9 stated that: “About 80-85% of our prices remain unchanged. We have not increased our prices.”

Reacting to this statement, Chairman of the GPRTU, Robert Sabah, said he has evidence that spare parts prices have been increased.

He told Class Business that: “Between car owners and drivers they know what I’m talking about, but they [spare part dealers] are only trying to throw dust into the eyes of the public. So are they saying when the dollar was going up, they maintained their prices as it is now today? Their prices fluctuate, I’m saying that it is falsehood; they only want to throw dust into the eyes of the public. It has been increased, I’ve evidence over the period because I buy spare parts myself and our membership also buys. We don’t take delight in increasing lorry fares because we know the ripple effect, so we do so with caution.”

Meanwhile, the GPRTU has indicated it would hold a crucial meeting to determine transport fares this week.

It is unclear whether the fares would increase or would be maintained.
