No standards for importation of used tyres

Lawra, Dec 23, GNA - Mr Divine Denoo, the Upper West Regional Officer of Vehicle and Licensing Department, has appealed to the government to set up standards for the importation of used tyres to stem the influx of sub-standard tyres.

He said the uncontrolled importation of used tyres has created problems for drivers who tend to purchase the used cheap tyres that burst and cause accidents.

Mr Denoo made the appeal at Lawra during the launch of regional road safety campaign to educate drivers on the need to adhere strictly to motor and vehicle regulations.

''The weather over there is different from our weather and so when they bring such tyres here they cannot withstand our harsh climatic conditions.''

He appealed to the staff of eye clinics not to allow persons with eye problems to go through the eye test.

Mr. Reynolds E. Kwakye, the Regional Chairman of the Road Safety Committee, said 38 motor accidents were recorded between January and December as compared to 31 recorded at the same period last year. Some 56 vehicles were involved in the 38 accidents out of which 14 were prosecuted with 10 persons convicted, paying fines totalling 25 million cedis.

Earlier on school children marched through the principal streets of Lawra as part of the launch carrying placards some of which read ''If you drink do not drive and if you drive do not drink'', ''every life is precious,'' maintain your vehicles regularly'' and ''do not overload your vehicles.''

Mr Wahabu Halidu, who was adjudged the best driver of the region, was given a double-door refrigerator donated by Donewell Insurance Company
