President John Dramani Mahama has welcomed a £101 million investment in the Takoradi dry dock project, describing it as a major opportunity to drive industrial growth in the Western Region and strengthen Ghana’s maritime sector.

Speaking at the Ghana-UK Investment Summit in London on Monday, June 1, 2026, President Mahama said the project aligns with government efforts to spread industrial development beyond the traditional industrial hub of Tema and create new economic opportunities across the country.

The investment was announced by the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Christian Rogg, who revealed that the funding would be provided through the UK-backed Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG).

According to him, the Takoradi dry dock facility represents PIDG’s largest investment in Ghana to date.

Rogg said the ship repair and dry-docking facility at Takoradi Port is expected to create up to 430 jobs, with women projected to fill about 30 percent of the positions.

He noted that the project would enhance Ghana’s maritime industry and position the country as a key ship repair hub within the West African sub-region.

President Mahama observed that much of Ghana’s industrial investment since independence has been concentrated in the eastern part of the country, particularly around Tema.

He stressed the need to shift greater attention to the Western Region, which he said possesses significant untapped industrial potential.

“Since our first president established the industrial town of Tema and the port at Tema, a lot of our investment in terms of industry has gone towards the east. It is time to move westwards. And that shipbuilding industry would be a jewel in the West,” President Mahama stated.

The Takoradi dry dock project has been under development for several years as part of efforts to establish a ship repair and maintenance hub on the Gulf of Guinea.
