Re: Finance Ministry reacts to Dr. Bawumia’s speech

.....on the state of the economy.

1. We wish to remind the noble civil servants at the ministry of finance that politicians come and go but civil servants will remain and so they owe it as a duty to the good citizens of Ghana to be honest, fair and very diligent in the discharge of their duties.

2. We have noted with disgust, the attempt by a whole ministry of the republic of Ghana to slander and denigrate the vice presidential candidate of our noble party. We wish to remind Mr. Abdul Hakim Ahmed and other officials of the ministry of finance, of their legal responsibility as civil servants to not use their positions to engage in party politics. These officials are better of taking a true stance in pursuit of their service to the nation than pandering to the whims of their present political bosses. Ghana is seeking to build strong institutions that function creditably irrespective of the philosophy of its political leadership. The statement released today by the ministry of finance in no way aids in the achievement of that objective.

3. We further wish to remind the ministry of finance of the fine that Ghana was paid to pay in 2001 when it was fined by the IMF for misreporting facts and figures in the year 2000 and before. We are of the opinion that the professionals at the ministry should be able act professionally despite the bidding of the political master as they have been known to do to avoid such unpalatable events in the very near future as it seems for now, Ghana is headed back there.

4. We also wish to make known the fact that the personality attacks on Dr. Bawumia have been duly noted but will be ignored in the interest of peace and building strong institutions. Regrettably, the statement by the ministry of finance sounds rather more akin to sentiment coming from NDC serial callers and propagandists. It is as though the finance ministry has decided to join in their ranks, that is, if the statement is one of consensus from the ministry, a development we doubt occurred.

5. We wish to however congratulate the hardworking professionals of the ministry who have called us to disassociate themselves from this abusive statement. We hope that the few tares within your midst will be weeded out by you the professionals.

Long live Ghana. Long live our strong institutions. Long live our professionals.
