Mr Ato Van-Ess, Chairman of the Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry (STCCI) on Tuesday said ensuring safety in the extractive industry continued to be a major concern to industry players.

This is because safety was key to protecting, retaining and growing the human base particularly in the oil and gas sector where high safety standard was required.

Mr Van-Ess said this at the official launch of the 2014 Ghana Extractive Industry Safety Conference, an international event slated for October to bring industry players, both local and international together to deliberate on ways on improving safety in their operational areas.

The conference has the central objective of identifying new trends, standards, innovations, risks and opportunities in health and safety in the extractive industry.

The conference, which would be held from October 22 to 24, is themed: Driving Industry Excellence through Health and Safety and is opened to all Ghanaian small, medium and multinational businesses.

Already, a team from the Western STCCI had visited Trinidad and Tobago to understudy their operations regarding safety in the oil and gas business.

Mr Van-Ess added that the Conference had also been launched in the United States of America and Trinidad and Tobago with Ghana, the host country doing the official launch.

He said the conference would be in six thematic areas, which included global occupational health and safety policies and regulations, available standards and policy frame work in Ghana and employee and workplace health and safety.

The rest are international trade health and safety, supply chain health and safety as well as public health and safety
