In an effort to modernize public transportation in the capital city of Accra, the Accra-Tema City Council, under the direction of President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, launched a new taxi service equipped with 50 brand-new Russian-made cars.
The initiative by Nkrumah aimed to provide reliable and modern transportation in the capital.
Footage of this event showing vibrant drivers and commuters using the fleet for their various commutes has emerged.
Notably, the vehicles were right-hand drives, showcasing Ghana's original driving style before switching to the righ-hand under the 'Operation Keep Right,' introduced by General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong during his regime.
The first fleet of vehicles brought into the country consisted of taxis and vans that often transported workers and individuals from Accra to Tema.
Some of the cars had inscriptions depicting their entry and destination points.
Overall, the introduction of these vehicles symbolized the government's commitment to enhancing the city's infrastructure and public services.
It also aligned with Nkrumah's broader vision for Ghana's rapid development and industrialization, reflecting the strengthening ties between Ghana and the Soviet Union during that period.
During that era, the availability and quality of these taxi services in Accra were said to have provided residents with a reliable and modern transportation option.
Today, Ghana has taken a giant step towards the use of ride-hailing apps such as Uber, Bolt, Yango, among others for transportation.
