There is adequate LPG to meet national demand – NPA

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has dismissed claims of an imminent shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the country.

In a press release seen by GhanaWeb Business, the Authority stated that current LPG stocks are sufficient to meet national demand.

It added that more than 20,000 metric tonnes of LPG are scheduled to be delivered between 21 and 27 October 2024, under the LPG Tender programme.

Furthermore, Sentuo Oil Refinery is producing LPG, which supplies the market daily.

“There is adequate LPG in the country to meet national demand. The opening stock of LPG as of 9 October 2024 was enough to last almost two weeks of national consumption. In addition to this, the Sentuo Oil Refinery is also producing LPG, which serves the market daily,” the statement from the NPA read.

“The Authority wishes to reassure the public that there is no threat to the supply of LPG in the country and no imminent shortage of the product,” it added.

The NPA also stated that it is working closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that loading to the Western Region is prioritised to address the challenges in that area.

Additionally, the NPA has directed LPG Marketing Companies (LPGMCs) to load the product from Tema to supply their retail outlets.

The NPA’s comments come after the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Marketers Association of Ghana warned of a potential gas shortage likely to begin next week, due to dwindling LPG reserves and complications arising from new import regulations introduced by the Authority.

Vice President of the Association, Gabriel Kumi, expressed concern over the current stock of LPG, stating that it would not last beyond the week.

He asserted that the 10,000 metric tonnes recently delivered would soon be exhausted.
