Tomato prices witness sharp increase – Survey

Prices of some commodities are on the rise while others remain relatively stable in the week to Friday, a GNA survey in some major markets in Accra has revealed.

The survey showed that while commodity prices were stable in the Madina market on Friday, the prices of same commodities are on the rise in the Makola, Tudu and the Mallam Atta markets.

For Example, while the price of a bowl of tomato has remained unchanged at GH¢ 9.00in the Madina market, the same commodity was going for between GH¢ 10.00 and GH¢ 15.00 in the Makola, Tudu and Mallam Atta markets.

At the Madina Market, the price of a bowl of groundnuts which was sold at GH¢10.00last week was unchanged on Friday, while a bowl of onion also remained at GH¢7.00 from last week. Five fingers of plantain are going for GH¢5.00.

At the Makola and Tudu markets, the price of tomatoes saw an increase while prices of other foodstuff remained unchanged compared to last week. A small bucket of tomatoes which was selling at onion also remained at GH¢7.00 now sells at onion also remained at GH¢7.00 from last week now sells between GH¢8.00 and GH¢10.00 depending on their sizes.

Three small tubers of yam were being sold for GH¢7.00 and GH¢8.00 while a heap of cassava was sold at GH¢2.00 Three fingers of ripe plantain sold for GH¢2.00 while six pieces of unripe plantain are being sold at GH¢5.00.

A cup of white beans sold at GH¢2.50 while a cup of "agushie" also went for GH¢4.00. A bowl of maize sold for GH¢4.00 while a bowl of groundnuts was selling at GH¢10.00.

At the Mallam Atta market, the prices of commodities such as plantain, beans, yam and local rice all saw marginal price increases. The price of a bowl of pepper has increased from GH¢3.00 to GH¢4.00 for the red pepper and from GH¢2.00 to GH¢3.00 for the green pepper.

Similarly, a bowl of maize, which was sold at GH¢3.00 last week is now GH¢3.50, while eight fingers of plantain which was sold for GH¢2.00 has moved to GH¢3.00 as compared to the previous weeks. A bowl of local rice which was sold at GH¢8.00 has increased to GH¢8.50, while a margarine cup increased from GH¢1.50 to GH¢2.00.

The price of tomatoes has increased from GH¢14.00 to GH¢15.00 as compared to the previous weeks. A bowl of garden eggs which sold for GH¢7.00 is now going for GH¢8.00 while the price of a bowl of groundnuts slightly edged up to GH¢10.50 in the previous weeks had increased to GH¢10.00 pesewas.
