Tourism Authority begins audit into Kintampo disaster

The Ghana Tourism Authority has begun an audit at the Kintampo Waterfalls and its attendant circumstances that led to the death of 18 persons and left dozens of persons injured.

Acting Brong Ahafo Regional Manager of the Authority Mr Joseph Appiagyei who gave the hint on Wednesday during mynewsgh.com team’s visit, said it is necessary to conduct such an audit to help them put things right to avert a similar occurrence in the future.

He revealed that the facility belongs to the Kintampo North Municipal Assembly but operated in partnership with some private individuals.

The latest move comes on the heels of calls by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) minority in Parliament on government to thoroughly carry out full scale investigations into the Kintampo Waterfalls incident and make the findings public.

The minority leader Haruna Iddrisu also called on government to carry out an immediate safety audit of all tourist destinations with the view of guaranteeing the safety of revelers.

Independent checks by mynewsgh.com at the facility revealed a few operational lapses giving rife to concerns that the place over the period has been left to deteriorate without any proper investments despite the revenue the assembly generates from it.

Eighteen (18) persons died and more than 30 left with various degrees of injuries after trees at the waterfalls fell on revelers last Sunday afternoon.

The deceased persons were mostly students from the Wenchi Methodist Senior High School and other students from S the University of Natural Resources in Sunyani and holiday makers.
