Sekondi, Nov. 10, GNA - Two US based companies have expressed interest in setting up a biosphere plant in Ghana to produce electricity and water from all kinds of waste.

Representatives of the companies, Mr John Monteiro, President of ASEC Corporation and Mr Adrain Olivera, Vice President of Global Entrepreneurial Endeavours announced this when they called on Ms Betty Bosomtwi-Sam, Deputy Western Regional Minister at Sekondi.

The two also met and discussed the proposal with Mr Kobina Pra Annan, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Anthony Bassaw, District Chief Executive for Mpohor Wassa East, Miss Emelia Arthur, District Chief Executive for Shama, Mrs Christina Cobbina, District Chief Executive for Wassa West and Mr Jones Amoah, District Chief Executive for Ahanta West. Mr Monteiro said the process of the project would require government's undertaking to purchase the water and electricity.

If accepted and approved by government, he said, the plant would be constructed by a team of experts from the US and would take about a year to complete.

Mr Monteiro said the companies have also proposed an affordable housing project.

Mr Oliveira noted that landfill sites had not comprehensively solved the emerging waste problems of many countries adding "the biosphere technology is a perfect system that uses three processes or regulatory methods to ensure zero emission of harmful substances into the environment". He said the companies were ready to go into partnership with the government, local authorities and firms to get the project started. He assured that training of the locals would be high on the agenda in such partnership.

Ms Bosomtwi-Sam said government was ready to work hand in hand with companies and individuals who have the interest of developing the country. She said the proposals of the companies were timely because waste management was becoming a problem for the country and especially for the region following the discovery of oil in the area. 10 Nov. 09
