Vegetable farmers worried about poor roads

Vegetable farmers in Breme, Ohianimguase, Mansin and Bofoakwa in the Tano South District, have expressed worry about the deplorable state of the main road in the locality, and appealed to the assembly to re-construct it.

They noted that because of the poor nature of the road, drivers have failed to ply it, especially during the rainy season, a period of bumper harvest.

Mr Williams Ofori, Assemblyman for Breme, made the appeal on behalf of farmers in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Breme, on Thursday.

He said during the rainy season, vegetables and other food crops rot in the communities as the drivers refuse to convey them to Bechem due to the bad state of the roads.

Mr Ofori said drivers, who consider conveying the food crops to Bechem charge exorbitant fares ranging from GHC5 to GHC10, on the five kilometer distance.

The assemblyman said the farmers had made persistent appeals to the district assembly, but to no avail, and appealed to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to intervene.

Mr Kofi Boampong, a commercial driver in the locality told the GNA that the nature of the road had compelled many of his colleagues to avoid it.

He said the drivers took the decision because the farmers could not pay the fares demanded. Mr Boampong said the road had not seen any major rehabilitation works over the years and appealed to the district assembly to assist them.
