Please, please, please ... give use a break. Do you think Ghanaians are fools? How do you plan to run a 24 hour economy to create jobs? Majority of the Ghanaian workers are privately owned like market women, seamstress, mechanics, carpenters, spare parts dealers, used car dealers etc. These people constitute the majority of Ghanaian workers. The government of Ghana is the biggest employer in Ghana and we can't afford to double the amount of people employed by the government. The private sector also can't absorb new expenditure to double their current payroll. So, are you telling Ghanaians that you're going to compel the privately owned businesses to work 24 hours? Moreover, Ghana doesn't have a lot of factories to employ new people to work 24 hours. So, please, don't throw dust in the eyes of Ghanaians thinking that we are fools/gullible to accept any slogan as a policy. That's what the 24 hour economy is ... just a slogan. In reality, it can't work in Ghana. The more I think about it, the less sense it makes.

24 hour economy will only work in a manufacturing based economy and not the Ghanaian economy where there are not that many manufacturing plants. Moreover, the government is not financially positioned to create new factories. The 1D1F policy of the NPP only succeeded in creating over 100 manufacturing factories but they don't have the capacity to employ lots of workers. What Ghana needs is to find ways to mobilize local revenue so that we stop going to IMF. Majority of Ghanaians don't pay tax and so the government has no other choice but to depend on external financial sources through loans, grants and handouts. But we need to stop this trend. That's why Bawumia's policies are very laudable. They seem to tackle Ghana's economic problem from the root. Revenue generation is the key to Africa's problem. There's no African country with a proven taxation system that works. We need good roads, schools, hospitals, good paying jobs but we don't want to pay taxes. Where do we expect the government to get all those funds from to undertake all these infrastructural projects we need? The only logical solution is to borrow from abroad. But the Bible says, the borrower is always a slave to the lender. For how long are we going to continue this trend. Bawumia is the only person thinking about stopping corruption with digitization and mobilizing revenue internally by fixing the taxation system. Let's be careful about who we choose to lead our motherland Ghana. We need someone with ideas that fits our system and aims to stop all the leakages.

And Teshie too. There used not to be stealing in Teshie because when you make the attempt to steal, you will be caught because most of the residents there don't sleep. During the day, people at the sea shore mending their nets and by evening, they set sail to sea. By dawn they are back. Those who work in Tema too run three shifts. So the whole day is ablazed with activities in Teshie. The 24 hour economy is already in existence in Ghana. What is actually lacking in Ghana is economy of scale and so our products are expensive. This is where government can help by assisting industries to acquire cheap and easy loans.

Our inner and inter-city transportation system is still a problem.
Policing & Security is also a problem.
Electricity supply is another headache.
Drinkable water supply adds to the list.
Banks, for example, may close late but are the workers going to be safe on their ways home?
Our leaders and politicians must get things done rather than just running their mouths making all sorts of promises.
And our President must start paying income tax, too.

Folks, this slogan of 24 hr economy was imbibed into Mahama's conscience by Dr. Amakye Boateng of KNUST, a diehard ndc supporter. He introduced it to Mahama without analysing the prose and cons of if. For that reason of not understanding of the concept, each and every ndc apparatchiks has different interpretations. Joseph Yamin, a national organizer of the ndc also said by the 24 hr economy, those selling bush meat can also sell their merchandise in the deep night by the roadside. The truth of the matter is, Mahama himself doesn't understand his own slogan, therefore cannot explain it to his people. On a radio station, I heard another ndc communicator saying by the 24 hr economy farmers can go to their farms and work by offering them with generators. Wow, what a mindset? Mahama, you've no vision else you wouldn't promise the nation of ''nkoko nketenkete,'' nkokobuo nketenkete '' and ''mpreko nketenkete''. You're tired and run out of ideas.

MISCONCEPTIONS OF THE 24-HOUR ECONOMY
Many of those who have been contributing to the 24 hour economy conversation are either disingenuous or ignorant. One common flaw in the positions espoused by the advocates is the confusing of production with productivity. For example, running three shifts at Passport office or DVLA will not necessarily be beneficial to the economy. The delays experienced at these two particular institutions are due more to corruption, incompetence and poor work culture. I can say without hesitation that the extra costs of running additional shifts will far exceed the extra revenues that will be generated by the service providers. The cost will not be limited to the salaries of the personnel that will be employed. With the salaries come several other related social costs of employment, including welfare, security, theft and misuse of organizational resources, etc.
If the straight 8-hour day workers perform their duties diligently, honestly and competently, there will be no need for extra shifts at these institutions. I would rather say that these organisations are currently over-staffed. I have always marveled why some public institutions can have the filing of their financial statements fall into three or more years arrears when their offices are littered with desktop and laptop computers. What is amore appalling is that the CEOs and Financial Controllers or Directors of these institutions remain at post and enjoy outrageous perks.
I recall that about 10 years ago when I worked for a public institution, a team of 8 managers were to undertake an important out-of-office assignment. It was estimated that the assignment would take 3 to 4 days. I offered a simple Microsoft Excel solution to handling the assignment. The job was done in 3 hours.
For companies engaged in physical production of goods, the need for extra shifts will be spontaneous, provided there is demand for their output. In the 1970s I worked at a Factory which operated 24/7. Currently in Tema, for instance, quite a number of companies operate 24/7. So this in not new. The confusion must STOP. Extra shifts do not create ‘real jobs’; increased and sustainable demand for goods and services will create REAL JOBS and EXTRA SHIFTS.
Please, please, please ... give use a break. Do you think Ghanaians are fools? How do you plan to run a 24 hour economy to create jobs? Majority of the Ghanaian workers are privately owned like market women, seamstress, mecha ...
