The Bukina ban on tomato.exports should teach us a simple lesson ie We in Ghana should go " value addition" in many fronts, including Agricultural output. There is no sensible basis for exporting raw and importing what we do produce. We have two tomato seasons, many areas in Ghana do grow tomatoes. All we need to do is encourage the many known tomato-farmer groups to expand their acreages.in less than one year Ghana SHOULD be producing ALL the tomatoes that we need. The Minister calls for individuals to grow tomatoes in their homes. We have been along that path before( OFY). In the long term it is better to encourage the groups which grow the crop as a serious business. Finally, It is time.for the Ministry of Agric.to come up with a medium to long term plan for the growth and development of Agriculture as a.major contributor to the livelihood of Ghanaians.
