The Ministry of Energy has dismissed calls for the resignation of sector minister, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, describing the demands as politically motivated and unjustified amid ongoing efforts to stabilise Ghana’s power supply.

On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the Minority in Parliament urged the minister to step down, arguing that he has failed to adequately address persistent challenges in the energy sector, particularly recent power outages affecting parts of the country.

The Minority contended that the intermittent electricity supply reflects leadership shortcomings and warrants a change at the helm.

Responding to the claims, the Ministry maintained that the current administration has made significant progress in managing the sector and addressing longstanding issues inherited from previous governments.

Speaking to Citi News, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, defended Dr Jinapor’s record, citing measurable achievements under his leadership.

He highlighted efforts to expand generation capacity, sustain power supply for over a year without load shedding, and address financial constraints in the sector.

“For someone who has kept the lights on for 12 months without load shedding, is he someone you would describe as a failure? For someone who has consistently paid debts, honoured commitments to utility companies, and attracted new projects, is that the person you describe as such?” Rockson questioned.

“Read the press release by the utility company. After the government paid $1.47 billion, please read the release. Then listen to what the industry is saying, not what so-called politicians are saying, but what the industry is saying about Dr Jinapor,” he added.
