PIWA touts contribution to Ghana's health system and economy

The Pharmaceutical Importers and Wholesalers Association (PIWA) has officially launched its 10th anniversary of its formation.

The anniversary launch, which was on the theme "A Decade of Impact Through Effective Collaboration," was held in Accra on Thursday, July 9, 2026.

Speaking at the event, the President of PIWA, Pharm Dr William Adum Addo, touted the contribution of the Association to Ghana's health sector and the economy.

“Today is a historic occasion. It is not merely a celebration of 10 years of existence; it is a celebration of service, 10 years of resilience, 10 years of partnership, and 10 years of contribution to the health and wellbeing of the people of Ghana.

“Our theme, ‘A Decade of Impact Through Effective Collaboration,’ could not be more apt. Healthcare is one of the determinants of national development. Every thriving nation depends on a healthy population, and every healthy population depends on timely access to safe, effective, quality, and affordable medicines.

“That is why our association has made its contribution. Behind every medicine dispensed in a hospital, every prescription (sic) at a pharmacy… and every life-saving treatment administered in our communities, there's a supply chain powered by countless professionals.”

Pharm. Dr Adum Addo also praised the government for working with the Association and called for continued collaboration to further strengthen the pharmaceutical sector.

The Pharmaceutical Importers and Wholesalers Association (PIWA) was established in 2016 to provide a unified platform for businesses engaged in the importation and wholesale distribution of pharmaceutical products in Ghana.

The Association was formed by a group of leading pharmaceutical importers and wholesalers who recognised the need for a collective voice to advocate for the industry's interests, promote collaboration among members, and engage constructively with government, regulatory authorities, and other stakeholders on issues affecting the pharmaceutical sector.

The Association's founding leadership was headed by Pharm Dr Samuel Kow Donkoh, who served as its first President from 2016 to 2020. Former Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, served as its first Vice Chairperson.

Since its inception, PIWA has championed professionalism, ethical business practices, and compliance with Ghana's pharmaceutical regulations.

Over the past decade, the Association has grown into a key stakeholder in the country's pharmaceutical industry, contributing to regulatory reforms, capacity-building initiatives, public-private partnerships, and policy advocacy aimed at ensuring the availability of quality, safe, and affordable medicines through a resilient pharmaceutical supply chain.
