  Wales could become the first country in the world where politicians can lose their jobs for lying to the public.
  
  In March 2026, the Welsh Parliament advanced the Member Accountability and Elections Bill, a proposal that would make it a criminal offence for candidates and elected lawmakers to knowingly publish false or misleading statements before elections.
  
  The bill would also introduce recall powers, meaning politicians could potentially be removed from office between elections for serious misconduct.
  
  Supporters say the move could help restore trust in politics by making elected officials more accountable for what they tell voters. Critics, however, warn that the rules must be written carefully to protect legitimate political debate and free speech.
  
  The proposal has passed its first legislative stage, but it is not law yet and is still being amended.
  
  If approved, Wales could set a precedent that no other country has tried before: lie to the public, and you could lose your seat.
