The proposed upgrade of Kenya's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is officially valued at 154.2 billion Kenyan Shillings (approximately $1.2 billion).

The government officially signed this design-and-build modernization contract with the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

Cost Evolution and DiscrepanciesThe cost of the airport's expansion has undergone several changes and intense public debate:The Current Approved Budget: In mid-2026, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi and the Ministry of Roads and Transport explicitly capped and signed the contract at Ksh 154.2 billion ($1.2 billion).

The project has recently been streamlined further to a revised implementation framework of Ksh 116 billion for its immediate funding structure.

The $2.9 Billion Rumor: Initial regional media and Bloomberg reports alleged that a broader multi-decade master plan contract worth $2.9 billion (Ksh 375.4 billion) had been handed over to CRBC's parent company, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC). The Kenyan government formally refuted this higher figure, clarifying that the active contract is strictly restricted to the $1.2 billion cost.
