The Head of Mechanical Workshop at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), Dr Andrew Nyamful, has disclosed that the foundry project at the Commission has effectively been abandoned despite having the equipment needed to operate.
According to him, no new investment has been made in the foundry since Professor Frimpong, who was leading the project, left.
Dr Nyamful said the facility has since remained unused, even though all the equipment required to operate it is available.
“From the time Prof was taken off the foundry, nothing has been added to the foundry. No investment. Nothing. It’s still sitting in the bush,” he said this in an interview with GhanaWeb.

He explained that the foundry is equipped to operate at full capacity, raising questions about why the project has not been restarted.
When asked whether the facility could operate fully, Dr Nyamful responded, “Yes. Everything is here.”
Dr Nyamful believes the situation may partly be due to a lack of understanding among leaders about the potential benefits of the foundry to Ghana.
“I believe maybe the leaders don't understand what the foundry is actually going to do for the nation,” he said.
He also suggested that political considerations could be behind the failure to revive the project.
“Or if not that, it may be one of these usual things, dirty politics. That is to my understanding,” he added.

Dr Nyamful further noted that the professor who previously led the project is still alive and could be brought back to help complete the work.
The development raises questions about the future of the foundry, particularly why a facility with the necessary equipment has remained inactive and what steps could be taken to revive the project and put the available infrastructure to use.
