President John Dramani Mahama has said the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) generated $10.8 billion in foreign exchange from artisanal and small-scale gold exports in 2025, up from $4.66 billion in 2024.

Speaking at the Mining in Motion summit on October 19, 2026, he credited the board’s regulation of small-scale gold exports for the increase and commended its contribution to the economy.

“I’m happy to note that the Gold Board, in 2025 alone, with the regulation of export of small-scale gold, brought into this country $10.8 billion,” he said.

The figures cited by the President represent an increase of about 132% over the 2024 earnings.

President Mahama said Ghana exported 104 tonnes of gold from the artisanal and small-scale mining sector between April and December 2025, following the establishment of the GoldBod in April. This compares with 64 tonnes exported in 2024.

He also noted that the GoldBod had financed artisanal and small-scale mining operations using technology designed to prevent environmental destruction.

On measures to tackle illegal mining, President Mahama announced that GH¢200 million had been allocated in the 2027 Budget to support the activities of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Blue Water Guards.

He added that the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, together with REDD+, was beginning a major reforestation initiative across parts of the country, including the savannah regions.

President Mahama also outlined a local content policy aimed at increasing Ghanaian participation in the mining sector by shifting companies from owner-operated mining to contract mining undertaken by indigenous businesses.

He assured workers at operating gold mines that the transition would not affect their salaries or conditions of service.

“The transfer to contract mining will not affect their remuneration or their conditions of service. They will be paid the same way as they are paid under their current arrangements,” he said.
