IN A MONTH A HOUSEHOLD HAS TO BUY ABOUT GHC 600.00 OF ECG CHINESE PREPAID POWER TO SURVIVE. WHILST A SIMILAR HOUSE ELSE WHERE IN ACCRA BUYS GHC 20.00 FOR A WHOLE MONTH THIS IS MANSLAUGHTER.

How many privatised government companies which they have been divesting since the late 70s are still functioning? where is Ghana Airways, where is Black Star Line, Nsawam Cannery, GIHOC etc.... once upon a time ECG had only Akosombo to take power from,old transformers,old transmission lines a few sub stations,today they have sources like the Aboadze,Asogli,toy generators etc etc .I wont mention Bui because it wont make a difference if it comes on stream.When it was only Akosombo and all those useless network we had better service.With all the new transformers, lines ,new sub stations etc etc we have worse services.The people are the problem not the equipment.The solution is simple ,competition.We need to debate this and find out how best to privatize some aspects of it,selling it may not improve services like we experiencing with vodafone.

ECG could be broken down into smaller units as done in UK and USA and sold to different private companies where they will be regulated by the regulatory authority. In this wise there wont be anything like monopoly. At the moment they are more of drain to the national coffers than a gain with high level of wastage. If is done prudently i can assure you that it will rather led to reduction in prices as competition will be stiff as happening to the mobile phone sector. At the end the consumer stands to benefit and will lead to reduction in production cost and rid the system of any inefficiencies.
