We've been LIVING longer and the Retirement age at Sixty(60) years, is BRUTAL on social lives; the EXTENSION would however, ease off the pains and the hardships the 'retirees' face till the death comes calling.
Health diagnoses had improved, and translates into longer living which demands extra wages to compensate for the 'sixty(60) years at retirement.
Finally, the extension be universal and not limited to professionals per se!

Nana, are you aware that most elderly in the industries get kicked out after 50 (fifty) years of hardwork. This means most do not even live to attain the 6o (sixty) years of present compulsory retirement age. Increasing the retirement age to 75 (seventy five) would only mean more frustrations and more pre-mature deaths due to the frustrations the pensioners go through.
The cath word wshould be better living Standards so that even after 60 years you can still confidently and proudly contribute your quota as a member of a Consortium that government can form to encourage motivated retirees to contribute their experiences for some allowances. As it stands now the old retiree at 60 is struggling to survive, how would he/she think of offering any services to mother Ghana.

this does not make sense especially when there are a lot of young graduates looking for jobs. theold ones need some rest to enjoy their retirement before they die.

The employment situation has to be solved before allowing older workers to stay longer. The over 60s can share ther knowledge by working on contract. Good idea but Ghana is not ready yet.

I wonder if someone could tell me the life expectancy in Ghana. Elsewhere people live up to 80 years and above and this was the reason for pushing their retirement age to 65 so that they can contribute to the national coffers. In Ghana people many people die before they reach their retirement age at 60. It must be considered and examined critically.

In the UK, the 'default' Retirement age is 65 years. This is about to be changed to 67 years. This means there is no compulsory retirement age.The 65 is called default because although the retirement age is 65, this is not compulsory. You may decide to work after 65 years to any age that your health can take you,i.e work until you drop.It is an offence in the UK for an employer to use age as a reason not to employ you.The Pensionable age for men is however 65 years. There is a difference between Pensionable age and Retirement age.At age 65, you may decide to draw your pension and continue working, or defer your pension payments until you finally retire. Some people adverse to the extension of the retirement age in Ghana say that the youth must also be allowed to work. You see, spending creates jobs and the over 60 years will spend the salary the receive and would ultimately create more jobs.Other reasons are those already advanced by Daasebre Oti Boateng.

I support the chief partly but not all together.I agree that the old have all the rich experience the youth have to tap from.It helps them in the buildng process to merge into the system at the work place. On the contrariry, the old experienced might be loosing touch and therefore not all that innovative. The youth could also pump in fresh ideas that the old experience workers might not know.Change is necessary in every success equation.TIMES ARE CHANGING AT A FASTER RATE,AND CHANGES IN REIGNS WOULD EQALLY BE USEFUL.
Secondly, the youth could bring vigour in the system to salvage the slow movement of the nearly retired worker, who are gradually turning weaker and weaker.REST IS THE BEST ENVIROMENT THEY MIGHT BE NEEDING NOW,SO THEY CAN ENJOY THE REST OF THEIR LIVES IN PEASE AND HARMONY.MAY BE TAKE SOME TRIPS TO THE UNKNOWN WORLD FOR EXPLORATION SAKE.That's my view.

Yes,indeed as Daasebre has rightly said, the retiring age of workers in Ghana is very short inspite of the fact that, there are limited opportunities for employment in the country. The experieced old men and women are forced out to give way for the young inexperieced ones only to have production in these sectors of the economy slowed completely down b,cos of their inexperience on the job which is counter productive to the economy of the Nation at large. Many nations which used the age 60 have invariably graduated to either 65 or 67 years for the young ones to learn from their experiences and also to save the old men from their untimely deaths. The graduate unemployment has become unbearable in the country owing to lack of job openings ,but let us think of it this way, please bear with me,the business community who have found the opening of private schools and universities very lucrative should stop for the time being to use their accumulated resources to bring job openings in the country for the teeming school leavers and graduates to curb unemployment situation in the country as a means of wipping away the tears from the face of mother Ghana.

With the present high youth employment in Ghana extending the retirement age to 65 must be treated with caution.Exemptions could be granted to organizations to extend the contracts of workers whose expertise may still be needed even though they have reached their pensionable ages.Workers are being allowed to work beyond their pensionable ages in certain countries because of the dwindling number of their working age citizens.Such a problem does not exist in Ghana.

I am sure some at the top end, may want their time extended. Right now government, where necessary, extends the contracts of so-called experts by another year ot two. At the moment, no consideration of an extension should go beyond 62 years. However, I do not see the need to extend the retiring age, given the high unemployment rate in Ghana.
The civil service is bloated as it is. A huge portion of the national financial resources is spent on civil service, leaving very little for the development agenda of the nation.
Those who really want to work beyond 60, should take paycuts if they are on the top-end, and show their patriotism.
When I turn 60, I will volunteer as a substitute teacher, at a college or high school, if allowed.
