I believe most Ghanaians are not adequately informed on the opportunities alluded to in this piece. We have therefore not being able to make the fullest use of these Concessions.
The US Trade Representative's own assertions confirm what many discerning folks had always lamented about as a major deliberate blockade the West kept in our way to fair Trade with them. Now that the road has been opened wider for our products to flow to their Markets, our Government ought to do more to inform, encourage and guide our local Entrepreneurs and Farmers to produce more for Export.
We should have easier access to credit, and stress the benefits of proving and staying credit-worthy. Our Financial Institutions must lower their rates on lending to enable more folks realize profits from their endeavors to fuel expansion in their activities.
The more productive and worthy customers the Banks could have, the more revenue they would make, even with moderate rates of interest. The high rates stifle the potential of Businesses and keeps the Economy grow only marginally and just at the Macro fringes.
The transition to Street Addressing system must also be accelerated to facilitate tracking of entities for better identification and collection of debt. That would also help us monitor distribution of Economic activities and infastructure around the country better.
Centers for Business Motivation and Guidance of some sort and Chambers of Commerce must be established jointly by the Government and National Chamber of Commerce in all Districts and Regions to offer Trade and Industries Extension services to the folks in the hinterland.
It is only when we take advantage of these Trade Concessions fully can we see our Economy done the Justice we have been denied all these many decades.
Long live Ghana!!!

Yes I agree. How can one have financing with the bank when the banks are charging 33%+ interest? it is just not worth the venture. For AGOA to truly work, people need to band together and create businesses that can prosper ... read full comment

It's really sad to know that the SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN COUNTRIES are not making any effort to take the advantage AMERICA has given us to export our AGRICULTURAL,MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS to them,DUTY FREE.
I believe, not many AFRICANS,even know this opportunity offered for us.
It's sad that of the 300% increase since this AGOA PROGRAMME was introduced to AFRICA,about 84% OF THE TOTAL EXPORTS COMES FROM PETROLEUM,which is CRUDE,but not manufactured/processed product.
No-Oil exports to the US from SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA is only US$4.7 BILLION IN 2012.
THAT'S A SHAME ON AFRICA,AND VERY SAD INDEED.
OUR LEADERS ARE NOT CONCERNED ABOUT OUR ECONOMIC GROWTH,PERIOD.
BUT THIS PROGRAMME IS INTENDED FOR OUR ECONOMIC GROWTH,PROMOTE THE RULE OF LAW,AND INFRASTRUCTURAL ENHANCEMENT AND EXPANSION.
I believe, even MOST OF the manufactured products that go AMERICA,MIGHT BE MADE BY FOREIGNERS,THAT HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE ON THIS OPPORTUNITY,WE AFRICANS HAVE BEEN OFFERED,BY THE USA.
I cry always on this that we are wasting an opportunity to thwart the CHINESE effort on global trade.
Our leaders are not discerning to grasp this opportunity given,so we could take advantage to do what we have never done before.
IF ONE WANTS TO HAVE WHAT HE HAS NEVER HAD BEFORE,HE HAS TO DO WHAT HE HAS NEVER DONE BEFORE.
TO THIS END,OUR IGNORANT,NAIVE,NON- DISCERNING LEADERS,STILL WALLOWING IN MENTAL SLAVERY AND INFERIORITY COMPLEXITY,HAVE FAILED AFRICA.
THAT IS VERY SAD.
WE HAVE TO TRAIN OUR YOUTH TO STAND IN THIS CHALLENGES BUT OPPORTUNITY,OFFERED TO US,BY THE US,TO TAKE ADVANTAGE ON THIS TO EXCEL IN PRODUCTION SECTORS,WHICH OUR RAW MATERIALS COULD BE HARNESSED TO REALIZE THIS GOAL.
WHERE WE ARE IS WHERE WE WOULD EVER BE,UNTIL WE DECIDE,WHERE WE RATHER BE.
