Let the Company fold. There are private companies such as VIP Transit buses running a good service all across the country without asking for government help.
What is happening to STC is the simple fact that its a cesspit of corruption for government and Party officials.
During NPP regime its Chairman of the Board of Directors (forgotten his name) who incidentally happens to be a Board Member of National Investment Bank (NIB), guaranteed a loan from the NIB to STC to buy some low-quality sub-standard buses from China to a tune of millions. The same Chairman was the one who recommended these buses to be bought. Talk about conflict of interest. A Board Member of NIB , also a board Member of STC guarnateed a loan for the purchase of sub-quality Chinese buses. What may have happened is that the crook took a cut on the loan, and also a cut on the purchase of the buses.
The current problem started because the sub-quality Chinese buses broke down in less than 2yrs for a 10yr loan. So whilst the buses have broken down, the loan is still being paid for by the taxpayer. STC defaulted on some of the loans few years ago the crooked NPP Chair sued for judgement debt which he got with STC paying back the original loan and judgement debt as well. This is the genesis of STCs problem. Its corruption.
NDC with their kleptomanic fingers as well would do no different. This talk about pumping money and shareholders is directed at SSNIT to pump in more of the poor pensioners money into some crooked Party Chairman's hands and the situation would repeat itself all over.
Let STC fold up. The private sector run V.I.P Transit buses would take over its routes. They are more comfortable and not costing the taxpayer . Let STC fold up!

A perceptive analysis concisely written. Isn't the situation a revealing glimpse of Ghana's sickness, which shows no signs of even being diagnosed, let alone cured, by the country's parasitic politicians?

The STC existed before your father was born. Corruption is killing the company I agree. Attacking President Mahama for the problems of STC is simply stupid. STC was on its way down the drains beofre Mahama joined politics. How many busses did NPP buy for the STC when they were in office for eight years? Issues are suppose to be discussed sensibly so that solutions are found and not attacking individuals.

TRUE TRUE!!
And all that time, STC held a monopoly of the business. STC itself has never bought even ONE spare tyre to run the business. All generated money was stolen and shared among the so called managers who always quickly called government to "COME RESCUE US". And all the governments jumped to save the prestigious useless white elephant.
Private Taxi, Tro-tro owners, with, or without management education, have been able to run their businesses profitably.
Has John Mahama not quite recently bought SCANIA Buses from Sweden for this very STC? Or, have those Buses been already "privatised", and the Ghanaian Tax-payer expected to foot the bills as usual?
The earlier STC is given to Mrs Rawlings and her family, the better for us voiceless Ghanaians

Thank you my dear Mr Thompson for posting this article. Within the two years you referred to what have you done as an individual and more so in your capacity as an MD to overhaul the operations of STC? I am certain that you are sitting down patiently waiting for an outsider to come and prescribe the solutions for bail out. Is that the case? Do you have on hand the Management Plan for coming out of the financial distress in which STC finds itself? I will better ask you and your team to sit and do a hard type of thinking through the issues at stake and you will definitely find a way out. Remember where there is the will there is always a way out. For instance with 24 effective buses, one of the key questions to ask is: how many staff does STC require to work with in order to break even - no loss no profit? I know it is hard to talk of staff lay off in Ghana because organizations do not have the financial capacity to support such approaches. But if you have staff strength that cannot be supported by 24 buses, please know that all your troubles start from there. Within you can solve the problem. This is why you were made the MD so that HE the President and the Minister in charge of your organization will not be troubled with every day affair. If the going is tough for you, please call it off - tell them you cannot continue and give way.
It is time you acted indeed as an MD and stopped the loose talk. God guide you as you steer the affairs of STC. Note you can do it so rise up and build the broken walls of STC!!
Post your tel no. and I will call you. Bye.

I PROPOSE YOUR MANAGEMENT MUST LOOK INWARD AND MEET WITH YOUR UNION AND BAINSTORM WHY THE COMPANY IS NOT MAKING PROFIT AND HEAR WHAT THEY WILL SAY. START TO BUILD A BETTER WAITING AREA WITH DRINKS AND SANDWICHES FOR PASSENGERS WHILE THEY ARE WAITING. YOUR BUSES MUST BE ON TIME. YOU ARE IN CHARGE AND IF OTHER COMPANIES ARE MAKING MONEY IN TRASPORTATION, SO MUST YOU. THE PROBLEM STARTS WITH YOU AND YOU MUST SOLVE IT. DO NOT COMPLAIN BECAUSE YOU ARE FAILING IN YOUR DUTIES. AS I SAID BRING OTHER EXPERTS TO LOOK AT YOUR OPERATIONS AND MAKE SUGGESTIONS. DO YOU TRAVEL OUTSIDE YOUR OFFICES TO KNOW FIRST HAND WHAT GOES ON AT OTHER LOCATIONS THAT YOU OPERATE FROM? THEY SAY, IF SOMETHING IS BITING YOU, REMEMBER IT IS IN YOUR CLOTH.

The private transport operators like VIP are operating successfully with fewer buses.
STC must cut its overheads and running costs and root out corruption. It should publicise and strengthen its parcel service as an additional source of revenue. Commercial Advertising would generate further revenue. STC has expertise in engineering and transport. It has workshops, garages and warehouses. Services could be rendered to the public and private sector making this expertise available eg repairing vehicles, MOT, training drivers etc.
Management should look to generate revenue by commercialising all the services mentioned above. Recapitalisation would help, but not solve all the problems of the company. Better management would rescue STC.
