Where would Ghana be without the Akosombo dam, Tema harbour, our universities, teacher training colleges, GET secondary schools, primary schools, hospitals and clinics , Navy, Air force, Accra-Tema motorway, Tema oil refinery, Tema drydocks, Tema township, GBC TV to name but a few? The Bui dam project was abandoned in 1966. we were only able to complete a scaled-down version last year at a far greater cost.
Nkrumah was right to establish state corporations. At least it was a bold attempt for us to exploit our natural resources for the benefit of all our people. Instead of managing them well, we sold them to the private sector or simply closed them down after his overthrow. Witness the mess in which we find ourselves depending on foreigners to exploit our resources.
Until such time as we exploit our resources ourselves, we will continue to be impoverished in the midst of abundant wealth.
