Nigeria's recalculated economy is worth $510 billion, by far the biggest in Africa, officials announced Sunday of a long overdue recount that gives the West African nation continental bragging rights but does little for the nearly 70 per cent of its citizens living in poverty.
The new estimate of Nigeria's GDP adds previously uncounted industries like telecommunications, information technology, music, airlines, burgeoning online retail outlets and Nollywood film production that didn't exist when the last GDP count was made in 1990. Then, there were 300,000 landlines. Today, Nigeria has 100 million cellphone users.
With one fell swoop, Nigeria knocked out of the ring South Africa, whose GDP of $353 billion was previously counted the biggest on the continent, winning it a place as the only African member of the G20.
Figures announced by Nigeria's statistician general, Yemi Kale, nearly doubled previous estimates of the economy -- from 42.3 trillion naira in 2012 to 80.3 trillion naira for 2013. He said that equated to $509.97 billion , using an official exchange rate of 157.48 naira to $1. But the naira has been trading more realistically at about 168 naira to the dollar for months, giving a figure of $477.98 billion.
Finance Minister Ngozi Ikonjo-Iweala told a news conference Sunday that the recalculation makes Nigeria the 26th largest economy in the world and raises its per capita income to $2,688, making it No. 121 in the world, up from No. 135.
That is still feeble compared to South Africa's $7,336 for its population of 48 million. South Africa, bedeviled by mining strikes, violent protests over services and a lacklustre performance that has kept annual growth at around 3.5 per cent, still has infrastructure unrivaled on the continent, most notably a power sector that generates 10 times more electricity as Nigeria.
Nigeria's revised figures will lower its much-vaunted growth rate of 7 per cent but also will decrease an already low debt to GDP ratio of 21 per cent, which should lower interest rates should the government want to borrow more, economists said.
Financial analyst Bismarck Rewane called the revisions "a vanity. The Nigerian population is not better off tomorrow because of that announcement. It doesn't put more money in the bank, more food in their stomach. It changes nothing."
Nigerians took to social networks to share their feelings. "So Nigeria has now supplanted South Africa as Africa's largest economy. But I've not had light (electricity) for seven days, so it means nothing to me," said one tweet.
Another commented: "Nigeria is Africa's biggest economy - on paper. So technically, I'm rich in theory."

The blustering and blundering won't help our cause. Nigeria has the sole responsibility to look out for its national interests and so must Ghana. They must have reasons and concerns why Ecowas trade and regional intergration may not be on their priority list. I think Mahama should do his talking behind the scenes and avoid sparking off a media war between us and our greatest and closest english speaking neighbor in the region. Ghana- Nigeria friendship dates back many years and the least Mahama ought to be doing in his capacity as President is sustain past relationships if he's incapable of helping to raise it to greater heights. This loose talking will not only hurt feelings but also degenerate cordiality. Great leaders talk less while on the job and when they have to they talk responsibly and mostly behind the scenes, away from the media glow.

Nigeria is in West Africa just like Ghana-Why then should he go to London and discuss bilateral issues when he could better do it at home behind the scenes? May be he should consult his advisors on Nigeria for understanding of Nigeria diplomacy rather than endangering Ghana's relationship with Nigeria. At lease if Mahama cannot take the mutual relationship between Ghana and Nigeria to next level, he should strive to maintain the level he met it.

Minister of Trade and Investment, Segun Aganga.
Aganga said the agreement was not favourable to Nigeria.
The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, said Nigeria would not rush into signing the Economic Partnership Agreement, EPA, on trade liberalisation between the European Union, EU, and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.
The Minister said that since the Federal Government’s primary consideration in accepting to embrace the proposed agreement was to promote the overall well-being of the Nigerian economy, Nigeria would not sign the final agreement until certain aspects inimical to the overall interest of its economy were reviewed and amended.
Mr. Aganga, who was playing host to the Director-General, United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, UNIDO, Li Yong, said Nigeria had raised 10 objections to the proposals presented by the EU during the negotiations.
Under the proposed EPA, the EU proposed that it would immediately offer the 15-member ECOWAS and the non-member state of Mauritania full access to its markets. In return, ECOWAS would gradually open up 75 per cent of access to European markets, with its over 300 million consumers, for over a 20-year period.
Following the proposal, technical negotiations were wrapped up last month with the EU offering a 6.5 billion euro (about N1.47 trillion) package over the next five years to help ECOWAS cushion the effects and costs of integrating its economy into the global economy.
The ECOWAS region includes Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Niger and Togo.
Mr. Aganga, whose ministry played a major role in the negotiations, said certain provisions of the agreement were not in the overall best interest of Nigeria’s economy.
“The EPA is not ready for endorsement by the Heads of State and Government,” Mr. Aganga said at the end of the Summit of the ECOWAS Heads of State in Yamoussoukro, Cote D’Ivoire, last week. “A committee made up of representatives from Nigeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana and Senegal is looking at the issues raised by member states, particularly Nigeria. The committee is expected to come up with a proposal for adoption.”
He said when the Ministers went in for the meeting, the idea was to endorse the proposed EPA. He pointed out that the position had to change following various reservations and feedback from members of the private sector based on the ECOWAS model.
One major reservation about the proposal, the Minister stated, had to do with the way the proposed agreement by the EU was drafted; some aspect of which, Nigeria noted, would not be in the overall interest of her economy over the long term.
Mr. Aganga criticised the proposal by the EU that ECOWAS should open up 75 per cent of its market to Europe over a 20-year period. He said that this appeared harmless over the first five years, but the problem would manifest later, as there was no significant export activities to Europe at the moment.
The minister explained that, given Nigeria’s current condition as an import-dependent economy, it would be counter-productive to completely open its doors for imports without first of all developing its industrial sector to compete globally.
He said doing otherwise – especially in those sectors where the country has comparative and competitive advantage – would negate the objectives provided in the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan recently launched by President Goodluck Jonathan.
He said there were some areas and sectors that the EU wanted ECOWAS to liberalise, which, if done in line with the proposed EPA, would have a very negative impact on the NIRP.
“Nigeria is the biggest country in the ECOWAS and we are already producing some of those goods that they want us to liberalise their importation. What this means is that, not now, but from 2025 to 2026, based on the items that have been included and excluded, there will be significant loss of revenue to the government, loss of jobs, investment and loss of even the ECOWAS market,” Mr. Aganga said.
Underlining the need for ECOWAS to remain as one unit in the region, Mr. Aganga said, even where those items were imported into neighbouring countries, they would end up in Nigeria; a development that would have a negative impact on the country’s economy.
“It is important for us to work together as ECOWAS members and not to allow EPA to divide us,” Mr. Aganga said.
The ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, in a communiqué at the end of their 44th ordinary summit in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, endorsed the conclusion of the Agreement in principle, noting, however, outstanding technical issues.
Consequently, the ECOWAS Commission President and his counterpart of the eight-member West African Economic and Monetary Union, UEMOA, who are the region’s chief negotiators, were directed to establish a committee of representatives of Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal to revisit the outstanding issues and make proposals for the consideration of the leaders.
Both officials were mandated to work with the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, which is negotiating the EPA with the region, for an Association Agreement.
The protracted EPA negotiations, dogged by differences mainly over West Africa’s market access offer and the EPA Development Programme, EPADP, was one of the key issues discussed by the leaders during the two-day Yamoussoukro summit.
West Africa had originally wanted to liberalise 60 per cent of its market over 25 years, while the EU initial contribution was 16 billion euro (N3.63 trillion) to the EPADP to enable the region cope with the cost of adjustment.
Eventually, there was a compromise on a phased 75-per cent market access over 20 years, and a 6.5-billion euro EU contribution to the EPADP from 2015 to 2019.
Both parties have been working over the 12 years of negotiations to narrow their differences before signing the Agreement, which would create a World Trade Organisation, WTO compliant arrangement to replace the previous non-reciprocal regime that had guided trade relations between them.
The negotiations received a new impetus in October, 2013 when West African leaders, after an extraordinary summit in Dakar, urged both parties to demonstrate flexibility and also designated President Macky Sall of Senegal to lead the process for the resolution of the outstanding issues.

Ghanaians are suffering because you can only talk plenty at functions, and do nothing about your promises. Left to you alone, you would have signed the EPA, and ruin our local industries.
Nigerians industries are booming because their government is churning out policies calculated to boost local industries, whilst you are doing the opposite. And yet you had the effrontery to tell people that Nigeria is bullying the rest of West Africa.
Having assumed the leadership of the ECOWAS, don't allow the whites to bribe you, and force the EPA on us. Already they know that you are corrupt, and that you are the right candidate to push their agenda through. And that is exactly what you are doing now by attacking Nigeria for speaking the truth.

It's a tactic the Europeans are going to use to break the ECOWAS apart, by first breaking Nigeria and Ghana apart through a premature tension between Mahama and Goodluck.
That approach will sideline or breakaway Nigeria from the ECOWAS to enable Ghana and the remaining countries collectively sign on the EPA without Nigeria.
Once, they (Europeans) get such access, they will plan the next step to separately control Nigeria too. Thus, separating Nigeria from the ECOWAS will make it easier for them (Europeans) to negotiate any deals with the remaining ECOWAS Countries, and still control Nigeria strategically.
I have nothing against Nigeria trying to protect its interest. Ghana has opened its doors too wide to external influence - to Nigeria, especially in banking, and both to the West and the East. Ghana wants develop too fast and too easy, and that comes with a price.
We need to close our doors to certain industries to balance the development of our economy between Ghanaians and foreigners. We can't be overly dependent on foreigners - we then become extremely exposed and vulnerable when the pull the plug!

Ghana has become a country too difficult even to fight for. Politics has blinded the eyes of some Ghanaians to reality. Protectionism is a tool used by large economies like US and China, that is to say prevent goods from other countries into their countries,by this way protecting the interest of their domestic producers. In order words a country like Ghana unlike Nigeria cannot shut its doors to the outside, why because the population of Ghanaian consumers of those goods is very small, and no Ghanaian producer can even meet the cost of production of those goods by selling only to this small population of Ghanaians. The market is that small in Ghana, most indutries would close and send their workers home. That is why there are negotiations for the bigger economies in Africa for example Nigeria to allow small countries like Ghana, Benin and Togo to sell some of their products in Nigeria for which these countries have a comparative advantage. Comparative Advantage simply means the cost of production of these gooods in Ghana,Benin and Togo,is less than in Nigeria. In this way Nigeria can also export to its neighbours items for which it has comparative advantage, thereby encouraging inter- West African trade, a pillar of regional integration. The President therefore has done no wrong to champion the interest of Ghanaian exporters, excepting that he chose the wrong forum.

This is not the time for Nigeria to be complacent; it is time for Nigeria to do more by rallying the rest of West Africa behind her, and not unnecessary jubilation and arrogance.
Lack of focus and swollen head will bring Nigeria down, and that is exactly what the West is shooting for, with all those praises. WATCH-OUT, AND BE VIGILANT OF THE WHITE DEVIL!

President Mahama should have tackled the issue internally, first face to face talk with the President of Nigeria. If Nigeria still holds its position then he President Mahama will have to convince his fellow leaders of the so called bullied countries to stand together against Nigeria. I am sure together they can match Nigeria better even in Market terms and sit Nigeria up that competition is not between Nigeria and the member states of the ECOWAS but rather ECOWAS and other trading blocs or Nigeria with South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, etc. Nigeria must know that it will be shooting itself by undermining the economies of ECOWAS member states. Nigeria must copy wisely, China is what it is in the world today because of the strong economies of its smaller neighbours. ECOWAS Leaders both President Mahama Goodluck must be smart enough to prevent outsiders from feeding on their differences at detriment of the people of the ECOWAS Region.

Boamah Gyamera, your write-up sounds very intelligent but your solution to countering Nigeria's blockade of goods into Nigeria is impracticable, especially when you brought in a sub-ECOWAS trading bloc comprising Ghana and others to neutralise Nigeria's protectionism. Sorry to say that Economic blocs don't work with gangsterism blocs like the type you are trying to suggest. This is why you continue to see South Africa stand by Zimbabwe in all of its fight against the western countries, despite Mugabe's clear abuse of individual's rights frowned against not only by the West but by Africans as well. The day such sub-economic gangster group will take root in ECOWAS will mark the begining of the end of ECOWAS as an economic bloc.

No, gangster approach is not the solution. It will work against the entire West Africa, Nigeria's emerging growth would be destroyed in the process, and that is exactly what both the West and the East want to see - a divided West Africa.
This is where West Africans or Africans have always failed - the true unity - Africans indeed, have been mis-educated by the West. Nigeria as the largest economy and needs the rest of the ECOWAS Countries to even do better in mutual terms.
Hence, Nigeria has to take the lead and organize West Africa behind closed doors and plan on how to integrate effectively by helping one another to succeed without foreign interference, but unfortunately Africans have been trained to hate themselves. So my suggestion may not work, so sad.

Ayeniromo Ojikutu, I agree 100% with that a sub group withing an economic is disastrous but a protectionism within an economic bloc is more disastrous. No economic bloc functions with protectionism. I want us to a well functioned ECOWAS with or without Nigeria and that is no gangsterism. If anything it is the abuse of her economic, size and population power to block goods from member states into Nigeria that on can be termed as gangsterism. I would have suggested the same solution to Nigeria if the Ghana were to block goods from other member states. Both Nigeria and Ghana must stop their shortsightedness to that in the long term they will big winners if ECOWAS should function but very big losers if the ECOWAS should fail. Can Ghana or Nigeria afford the signing of the EPA with the EU by individual member states? How long do we want to remain slaves because of shortsightedness and selfishness?

Lie!
Nigeria has everything to fear from Ghana because of her xenophobic policies against Nigeria;
Even the very fact of President John Mahama hopping into the first available plane to go and bad-mouth Nigeria in a European capital 's just immediately after being installed ECOWAS chairman is itself proof enough that Nigeriaphobia is the only agenda of his tenure; and, that is reason enough for Nigeria to take urgent measures;
Nigeria has everything to fear from Benin because of her adversarial (and ever-ready-to-team-up-with-enemies of-Nigeria) policies against Nigeria;
Nigeria has everything to fear from Cote d'Ivoire because of her demonisation of Nigeria and Nigerians;
Nigeria has everything to fear from Togo because of her fraudulent policies against Nigeria, plus her betrayal of Nigeria(Togo being the one and only country with whom Nigeria founded ECOWAS);
Nigeria has everything to fear from Niger because of her readiness to be used by Nigeria's enemies to launch attacks against Nigeria;
Nigeria has everything to fear from Liberia because of her xenophobic policies against Nigeria and sheer ingratitude to, Nigeria (with particular regard to Nigeria's support during the Liberian civil war years, including Nigerian blood shed to bring Liberia peace!);
Nigeria has everything to fear from Sierra Leone because of her xenophobic policies against Nigeria and sheer ingratitude to, Nigeria (with particular regard to Nigeria's support during the Sierra Leonean civil war years, including Nigerian blood shed to bring peace to Sierra Leone!);
Nigeria has everything to fear from South Africa because of her xenophobic policies against, and sheer ungrateful attitude to, Nigeria (with particular regard to Nigeria's support during the apartheid days);
Nigeria has everything to fear from an ECOWAS that is quick to accept Nigeria's offsetting of 60 per cent of its budget, even quicker to marginalize Nigeria in the ECOWAS Commission; and far, far more quicker to side with anything anti-Nigeria; so much so that now is about time Nigeria repudiates its membership of ECOWAS, and re-channels its resources to better usage within Nigeria!
PRESIDENT JONATHAN, PULL NIGERIA OUT OF ECOWAS NOW!!!

The EU deceived him that they have opened their market for him, why can't he go and sale there? He rushed to sign the EPA and the EU intend to use ghana as the export point in west africa, knowing the ghana market is not what they are looking for. Their actual target is nigeria. They think the goods will from ghana be exported to nigeria anyway, even though nigeria has refused to sign the EPA. So, it's a smart move for nigeria to band those goods coming from ghana and other african countries that the EU are flooding their markets. Ghana should go and trade with the EU.
