ECG and VRA must sell electricity in kilowatt hours. How much does 1 kilowatt hour cost. This must be published so that we can objectively determine our power consumption. There are reports that while some districts are charged high electricity tariffs others are charged next to nothing. It is said that within the same neighborhoods in Accra/Tema tariffs vary from house to house.
Ghana has three hydroelectric dams: Akosombo dam, Kpong hydroelectric dam and the newly constructed Bui dam. Aside this we have the Aboadze power and Takoradi power plants. I am sure by now we can all conclude that the decision to invest in the West Africa Gas Pipeline was not a prudent one because Nigeria has admitted that they would not be able to supply us with the gas that we need.
However what is disturbing is that the additional power being generated is not being used by our industries or consumers. We supply Togo, Benin and Nigeria through two grids one in the south and one in the North. We also supply ivory coast and Burkina Faso with electricity. Inspite of this the cost of electricity to the average consumer has not declined and many would tell you that it is very expensive. There is another thing I don't understand. The government sometimes tells us there is power crises meanwhile electricity supply to other countries from Ghana continues unabated.
A look at the map of the national electricity grid would tell you straight away that the at least 12 Akyem districts in the Eastern Region which make up more than half the population of the region have been cheated.
In the load shedding exercise it is imperative that some key areas be left out. This should include where the three arms of government work and reside like Sakumono where MPs (representatives) reside and flag staff house and osu castle where the President works and resides. Where the chief justice works and resides should also be included. It should also include the premises of key government institutions like ministries. We need to quadruple our electricity production within the next four years but not through foreign investors.
The second MCC is bigger task because it involves technical abilities, execution and governance. Governance would be a problem; meeting targets and milestones would challenge the fund managers.

Golden Once in lifetime Opportunity – Ghana Business and Political Leaders, Use it Now now now!
Business and Political leaders, please pay attention to Obama’s African Forum in the USA in August 2014. This is a one time and lifetime opportunity. Your bailout ticket to get the country off what seem to be an apparent one way track towards an economic, political and social Crash and Burn destination!
Please do not hasten to take the apparent easy money and consumer oriented bait at this time. This action would only pile up on the existing crushing debt that would lead to eventual pawning of Ghana’s resources. Rather, please make haste and be bold and humbly ask for Technical assistance to develop a quick Comprehensive Business / Economic and Governance plan. Once this plan is secured, then the duty of the Ghanaian Leadership (whichever party is in charge) would only be to execute and manage the plan for everybody to monitor and judge for themselves. Development of this plan should be supervised by Ghanaian experts with open mind and assembled with proven US experts. The plan should at a minimum consider previous efforts including Dr. Nkrumah’s 7 yr. Development Plan, which is very relevant even today. The goals of the plan should include at a minimum the following:
? Establishment of Transparent Stable Governance – decentralization to enable significant fiduciary autonomous regional Operation; Establishment of national Zone Identification Code (ZIP Code) and GIS verifiable address system accounting for every asset and demographic entities to enhance statistical data computation and effective revenue collection.
? Establishment of Highly Prioritized Sustainable Self Supporting Infrastructure – including the following at a minimum:
o Electric Power – Sustainable Generation and Distribution
o Water Resources – Sustainable Purification, Distribution, Navigation, Irrigation, Recreation and Wastewater Collection/Treatment for responsible Environmental Protection.
o Railway and Ports – Sustainable and self-supporting revival of the Rail network and Port enhancement to facilitate commerce.
o Roadway Networks – Sustainable roadways for strategic Commerce and national Security support.
o Healthcare Delivery System – Sustainable National Healthcare system
? Establishment of Program to Educate, Stimulate, Mentally Orient and Empower Ghanaian Citizens to Own, Participate and support the new process.
This plan at a minimum would be a simple solution ticket to get this potentially prosperous nation on a path back to prosperity for all its descendants. Long Live Ghana.
